Buy a Dancing Longboard:
How to make the right decision
Dancing boards are designed to offer more comfort, agility and maneuverability than conventional longboards. It is therefore important to pay attention to certain features when buying. Here we show you what really matters when it comes to dancing boards:
This video, for example, shows what longboard dancing can look like:
Riding style: Pure dancing longboard or tricks desired?
Longboard dancing is a combination of dance and freestyle elements. It is up to each rider to decide which parts to focus on.
If the focus is more on longboard dancing freestyle with tricks and jumps, the board should definitely have a kicktail and a nose. These function as levers, facilitate balance and enable flips and ollies, for example.
When focusing on the dance element, the board must offer enough space. A longer and wider board is recommended for this. More on this in the following section.
Deck: What features should a longboard deck have for dancing?
The longboard dancing deck must be adapted to your own needs. The following properties must be taken into account when purchasing:
Size
Dancing boards are long and wide. They are between 100 cm and 150 cm long and at least 22 cm wide.
The longer and wider the deck:
- the more space there is for step combinations of the dance elements
- the more difficult the execution of freestyle elements
But that doesn’t mean that you can’t dance on short boards or do tricks with long boards. If you are unsure about your riding style, it is best to buy a medium length. So both styles are possible.
Material
The material determines the riding performance, durability and price of the longboard. The following materials are available:
- Bamboo
- Maple wood
- Plastic
We recommend boards made of bamboo or maple wood that have been reinforced with fiberglass. Glass fiber reinforces the board to withstand high loads. This makes the board slightly heavier and more stable.
Bamboo boards are lighter and slightly more expensive than decks made of maple wood. Maple boards should not consist of more than seven layers, otherwise they can be too stiff.
Plastic boards are the cheapest alternative. However, they are also the lowest in terms of quality.
Flex
The flex indicates the degree of stiffness of the deck. Choosing the right flex level is a question of preference and the type of use. The manufacturer’s specifications help you to choose the right flex for your own body weight.
More flex (soft):
- can improve carving, as the board reacts better to changes in direction
- ensures a softer landing during jumps
Less flex (hard):
- Supports longboard dancing tricks and jumps
Boards with the most flex are usually decks made of bamboo. Maple boards have less flex. The degree of stiffness also depends on the number of layers of wood.
Shape
The deck should be slightly concave to…
- …to make carving easier.
- …to find your way around the board better.
Concave means that the edges of the deck are slightly curved upwards. Too much concavity can lead to oversteering and interruption of the flowing movement.
This is what the ideal curvature looks like:
Griptape
Griptape generally provides greater grip on the board. Some dancing longboards do not have tape in the middle of the deck, as it tends to hinder the step and dance movements.
The kicktail and nose have griptape to make it easier to perform tricks and jumps. If the board has no tape or is worn out, it can be replaced.
Kicktail & Nose
The kicktail and nose are the slightly curved, tapered ends of the deck. They should be available if tricks and jumps are to be possible.
Wheels: Which wheels for a dancing longboard?
Larger wheels with a diameter between 65 mm – 75 mm are recommended for longboards because:
- they can maintain the speed of a thrust for a long time
- offer a wider contact area and enable more stable driving
- Rollers with a larger diameter can touch the deck and cause accidents
Wheels for dancing longboards should have a hardness of between 78A (soft) and 86A (hard). The appropriate hardness of the wheels depends on the desired combination of dancing and freestyle.
Soft rollers around 80A provide more traction and stability during dance and step movements.
Hard wheels around 85A are suitable for better sliding. Sliding is a technique in which the board slides across the road at right angles to the direction of travel.
Mounting form: Which axles (trucks) are suitable for a Dancer?
Most dancing longboarders prefer top-mount trucks. Top-mount means that the axles are attached below the deck. These make the board faster and more responsive when carving, ascending and descending and during spin moves.
Drop-through fixings are mounted through the board and screwed on top. The mounting shape provides more stability as the board is lower to the ground. Drop-through is often used by people who want to use the board universally, e.g. also for freeride, freestyle or downhill longboarding.

How much does a good dancing longboard cost?
What is the best dancing longboard?
Plastic longboards belong to the cheapest category. Longboards made of bamboo and fiberglass are usually found in higher price ranges above 150 $.
What are good brands for dancing longboards?
Good, inexpensive longboards are available from Apollo or Magneto.
Which is better for beginners, dancing longboard or skateboard?
The flex is another advantage of the longboard. Skateboards are usually very stiff, which makes steering more difficult. Less flex, on the other hand, is better suited for jumps and tricks.
Overall, the longboard is more beginner-friendly. It combines a good and safe riding experience with the ability to perform tricks. Skateboards are designed almost exclusively for the latter.
Which board is more fun to ride is something everyone should test out for themselves.
