Save yourself a lot of research: We’ll show you what’s important when buying a SUP board and how to make the right decision.

Checklist: What features to look out for when buying a SUP?

When looking for the right SUP board, the following features play an important role:

SUP Board Classes:
Which board for which application?

sup_boards_comparison

SUP boards are no longer just used for paddling tours on calm waters, but also for white water rafting, surfing or yoga on the water.

Depending on what you want to use the SUP board for, there are different board classes and test winners. These result from their special properties, which are best suited to the respective activities.

For which applications are SUP boards available?

Stand-up paddling has now developed many sub-disciplines that complement classic paddling on still waters. Possible areas of application include

  • SUP fitness training

SUP is a very good full-body workout as it uses different muscle groups and trains your balance at the same time. It is easy to learn and can be practiced by anyone from children to senior citizens.

  • SUP tours and SUP trips

Exploration tours with SUP boards are offered worldwide. These could be canal tours through the old town or longer tours through untouched nature reserves.

  • SUP competitive sport

SUP is now practiced as a professional sport. There are different variants, such as races or overcoming rapids.

  • SUP Yoga

Practicing yoga on the water is becoming increasingly popular. Special YSUPs are now even being produced for this purpose. Yoga is also possible with most all-round boards as long as they are wide enough and stable in the water.

  • Surfing and windsurfing

Although classic SUP boards are different from surfboards, both surfing and windsurfing on these boards have become established.

  • SUP with dog

Many paddlers take their four-legged companions with them on the board for stand-up paddling. You can read how this works here. (Important: don’t forget your dog’s life jacket ).

What SUP board classes are there?

  • Allrounder/Cruise Boards

Standard SUP boards, so-called all round paddle boards, are suitable for different types of use. It is characterized by its medium-length, rounded design and soft edges. The good riding characteristics make it particularly popular with beginners.

  • Touring SUP Board

If you want to cover longer distances with your board, touring boards are the best choice. They are longer than all-rounders and less rounded at the stern and bow. This reduces water resistance and increases directional stability. In addition, the pointed underwater hull makes the board faster than an all-rounder. But it is also less maneuverable.

  • Race SUP Board

Race boards are designed to reach maximum speeds. To this end, they are very long, up to 450 cm, and are made of particularly lightweight materials. Their hulls are similar to those of racing rowing boats. Some models have a rudder that is operated with the foot.

  • Wave SUP Board

Wave SUP models are best suited for surfing with SUP boards. They are very short in order to achieve high maneuverability and to be able to withstand higher waves.

  • Whitewater SUP Board

Similar to surfing, paddling through unpredictable eddies and currents requires a short board. In addition, whitewater boards are up to 90 cm wide to make turning easier. Many models are equipped with additional handles on the top of the board for the paddler to hold on to.

  • Childrens paddle boards

The small size and low weight characterize SUP boards for children. The material is also particularly soft to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall.

  • Yoga SUP Boards

Yoga SUP boards are usually a little wider and therefore more stable in the water. This means that some yoga exercises can be performed on it without any problems.

SUP Board Type:
Hardboard or inflatable SUP?

hardboard-or-inflatable

There are 2 different types of SUP boards:

  1. Inflatable boards (also known as iSUPs) and
  2. Fixed boards (also known as hardboards)

Both board types are characterized by various advantages and disadvantages, which BeyondSurfing explains below.

1Inflatable paddle boards (iSUP): For beginners & advanced riders

  • Inflatables can be rolled up small after use, which simplifies transportation and storage.
  • A matching bag is often included, in which the board and all accessories fit.
  • The inflatable boards are significantly cheaper than hardboards.
  • Poorer handling than hardboards.
  • Lower speed.

Inflatable SUP boards, or iSUPs for short, are made of robust PVC or polyurethane that won’t tear even if they come into contact with rocks or sharp edges.

An inflated iSUP is almost as firm as a hardboard, but with a much softer surface.

Note: ISUPs are particularly suitable for beginners and hobby paddlers.

2Hardboards: For advanced and professional users

  • Hardboards are deeper and more stable in the water.
  • More effective paddling, higher speeds can be achieved.
  • Different hull shapes and sizes allow use for e.g. surfing or white water rafting.
  • The transportation of hardboards is more complex.
  • higher purchase price resulting from the higher material costs.

Fixed SUP boards are made of rigid materials such as carbon, wood or plastic. They generally have very good handling characteristics and show outstanding performance in the water.

Note: Hardboards are particularly worthwhile for advanced stand-up paddlers and those who are serious about the sport.

SUP board dimensions:
What is the optimum board length and width?

sup_length

The size of the SUP board has an effect on its riding characteristics, load capacity and possible uses.

The following dimensions must be taken into account when selecting a SUP:

  • Length,
  • Width and
  • Thickness of the board.

The volume of the board (given in liters), which also has an effect on the riding characteristics, is calculated from the data.

Good to know: The dimensions of stand up paddle boards are often given in the American units feet (feet) and inches (inches). Where 1 foot = 30.48 cm and 1 inch = 2.54 cm.

SUP board length: Determines the speed and maneuverability

  • Short SUPs (< 275 cm):

Short SUP boards are less than 275 cm long. They are more maneuverable than medium-length boards and are therefore particularly suitable as wave and whitewater boards. Children’s paddle boards are also in this length range.

  • Generally applies (275 – 350 cm):

Most SUP boards are in the medium-length range between 275 cm and 350 cm. This length offers a good combination of maneuverability, stability and speed. All-rounders and boards for beginners can be found in this area as well as special boards for yoga or fishing.

  • Long SUPs (> 275 cm):

At over 350 cm, long SUP boards are mainly used as race boards or touring boards. They are less maneuverable and stable than shorter models, but reach significantly higher speeds.

How to choose the right SUP board length

Apart from specialized types of use such as surfing or white water, the rule of thumb is that the board should exceed the body length by the length of a paddle blade, i.e. approx. 20 cm.

SUP board width: Determines the stability and maneuverability

sup_width

  • Wide SUP boards:
You have more standing space on wide SUP boards. This makes it easier to maintain balance. At the same time, the maneuverability of the SUP board decreases.
  • Narrow SUP boards:
Boards less than 75 cm wide are significantly less stable in the water and are therefore more demanding to use.
The ideal width for beginners

Beginners should choose a board with a width of at least 78 cm in order to have a secure footing.

SUP board thickness: Determines the load capacity and stability

  • In general:

A thicker board is stiffer and more stable. This makes it more resilient and easier to keep your balance on it.

  • Minimum thickness:

With inflatable boards in particular, you should ensure that they are at least 15 cm thick, as otherwise the board could quickly bend in the middle.

  • Observe the maximum weight:

For almost all SUP boards, the manufacturer specifies a maximum weight with which the board may be loaded. This should be adhered to, especially by beginners, as paddling becomes very difficult with an overloaded board.

How to choose the right SUP board thickness

When estimating the weight, bear in mind that this may be increased by wet clothing, luggage on the board or passengers in the form of children or dogs. Your own body weight should therefore be well below the specified maximum weight.

SUP board processing:
What materials should the board be made of?

When it comes to materials, a distinction must be made between inflatables and hardboards, as both use different materials.

Good materials for inflatable SUP boards:
Inflatable paddle boards must be made of tear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials. PVC is usually chosen because it is hard-wearing, lightweight and durable. Either the entire board is made of PVC or it has a corresponding coating.

A good alternative to PVC is an iSUP board made of polyurethane.

Good materials for hardboards:
There is a greater variety of materials for hardboards. Good materials here include:

  • Carbon
  • Wood
  • Polyethylene
  • Polyester
  • Epoxy
  • Plastic
The standing surface must be non-slip

It is important that all boards have a non-slip standing surface. This is usually achieved using a rubberized deck pad.

SUP Board Hull:
How should the hull of the SUP board be designed?

There are two different hull shapes for SUP boards, which are suitable for different areas of use.

Planing Hull (Gliding Hull)

sup_glider_hull

A planing hull is flat and is therefore well suited for fast turns, but achieves less speed. It is mainly found on wave boards and all-rounders. Inflatables almost always have a hull like this.

Displacement Hull

sup_displacer_hull

With this hull, the water is displaced while riding and pushed under the board. This makes it easier to keep it straight and higher speeds can be achieved. The effectiveness of a paddle stroke also increases. Touring SUP boards, for example, are equipped with such hulls.

The right SUP technique?

Stay upright when paddling so that the paddle is vertical. This increases the effectiveness of the stroke. Also, always keep your arms stretched and use them when paddling. the entire upper body to bring more power into the water.

Reading tip: The right SUP technique explained simply.

SUP board accessories:
Which accessories should be included?

sup_equipment

In addition to the board itself, stand up paddling requires at least the following equipment:

  • a paddle,
  • the safety line,
  • an air pump (for inflatable boards).

It is therefore worth reviewing the stand up paddle accessories included before you buy. Inflatable boards in particular are often offered as a complete set, which includes numerous accessories in addition to the board.

Tip: As paddle boards for beginners often don’t have any equipment, it’s best to buy a complete paddle board set to start with. Paddle boards for beginners are much cheaper than buying all the parts separately.

What does a good paddle board set need?

sup-board accessories

In addition to the board itself, you will need a few other items for stand-up paddling:

  • SUP paddle:

SUP paddles are available in different materials. Aluminum paddles are generally the cheapest, but also heavier than models made of carbon or fiberglass. The paddles should be height-adjustable and not sink in the water if they fall out of your hand.

  • SUP paddle board leash:

The SUP safety leash is attached to the ankle and the other end to the board to prevent it from drifting away after a fall.

  • SUP air pump:

A special air pump is required for inflatable SUP boards. Hand pumps are often supplied with the inflatables. Electric pumps are a less expensive alternative.

  • Repair kits:

Small repairs to the SUP can be carried out quickly with these kits. However, you should seek professional help for larger defects.

  • Finns:

With iSUPs in particular, the paddle board fins are often removable. They serve to improve control of the board and simplify steering.

  • Backpack:

Inflatable paddle boards are often supplied with a matching SUP bag in which the board and accessories can be stored for transportation.

  • Drybag:

A drybag or waterproof net allows you to take valuables with you on the board without them getting wet.

The quality of the SUP accessories?

In addition to the range of SUP accessories, it is also worth taking a look at their quality. There are big differences in quality, especially when it comes to paddles and air pumps:

  • SUP paddle:

The paddles supplied are often made of aluminum and are therefore heavier than higher-quality fiberglass. However, such paddles are sufficient for beginners. It is important that the length of the paddle can be adjusted to suit the paddler’s height. Find out more: » SUP paddle buying guide.

  • Air pumps:

Air pumps from paddle board sets are not always of high quality, but they are light and easy to transport. Double stroke pumps are best, as they pump air into the SUP board both when the piston is pushed down and when it is pulled up. Find out more: » Paddle board pump buying guide.

Pro tip: Invest in an electric air pump

Inflating the SUP board with a hand pump usually takes 5 to 10 minutes and is often the equivalent of a short workout. If you want to save yourself this effort, buy an electric paddle board pump.

SUP Board Price:
How expensive can a SUP board be?

Prices for SUP boards start at 200 to 300 $ and can rise to well over 1000 $. This means that the boards are not a cheap purchase, even in the lower price range.

SUP boards under 500 $?

Good inflatable models are already available in the affordable price range below 500 $, which are perfectly adequate for the needs of beginners and recreational paddlers in particular. Good choices include the Aqua Marina Fusion SUP Board or the Bluefin Cruise SUP Board.

Occasionally, discounters such as Aldi and Lidl also offer SUP models in this price range. These make a good impression at first glance, but come from unknown manufacturers with less experience. BeyondSurfing recommends using established brands instead.

SUP brand models between 500 and 1000 $?

In the mid-price range of 500 to 1000 $, you will find both inflatable and fixed boards that are of a higher quality than cheaper models and also satisfy advanced riders.

SUP boards over 1000 $?

Expensive branded products with prices over 1000 $ are aimed more at professional athletes.

There are many established water sports brands in the price range from 500 $ upwards, as well as start-ups that specialize specifically in SUP. The best-known and most popular brands include

Bluefin, Aqua Marina, Fanatic, iRocker, Nemaxx, Explorer, WET-Elements, Bestway, Bugz, Mistral

Good to know: Consumer Reports or ÖKO-Test have not yet published any results on SUP boards, as the sport is still relatively new. These will certainly follow in the future.

Buy used SUP boards?

If you want to buy a used SUP board, you should definitely take a look at Ebay classifieds. Sometimes expensive boards can be bought at auction for little money.

But be careful: with inflatables, you can never be completely sure before you buy whether the board will actually deliver what it promises.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions and answers

What is SUP?

SUP is an abbreviation and stands for Stand Up Paddling. This is a trend sport that is particularly popular due to its versatility in water sports. The easy-to-learn sport is a fitness workout, leisure activity and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

How do I transport a SUP?

Most SUP boards are inflatable and therefore very easy to transport. Once the air has been released, the boards can be easily folded into a small space. A suitable carrying bag or rucksack is often supplied with the board.

Transportation is much more difficult with hardboards. This requires a sufficiently large car or roof rack.

Where can you SUP?

Traditionally, SUP is used on all still waters, i.e. on rivers, canals, lakes or the sea near the coast. There are now also SUP variants that involve riding in white water or surfing in waves.

Where can you buy a SUP?

SUP boards can be found in sporting goods stores, online or in specialized surf stores. Occasionally, discounters such as Aldi or Lidl also have SUP boards on sale.

How expensive is a SUP?

SUP boards are roughly divided into 3 price categories: Inexpensive boards for under 500 $, mid-priced boards between 500 and 1000 $ and expensive boards at over 1000 $.

How much does a SUP weigh?

SUPs usually weigh between 5 and 15 kg.

What types of stand up paddle boards are there?

On the one hand, a distinction is made between inflatable SUPs (so-called iSUPs) and hardboards. There are also different SUP board classes, which differ in size and shape depending on their intended use. These include race boards, wave boards, whitewater boards, touring boards and all-rounders.

Which SUP is suitable for beginners?

Beginners are best advised to use an inflatable all-round board. These are versatile, stable and have good handling characteristics.

Which SUP accessories do I need?

The most important thing is the paddle and a safety line. An air pump and a carrying bag are also important for inflatable boards. Repair kits, removable paddle board fins and dry bags for carrying valuables on the SUP are also practical.

Which SUP is right for me?

This depends on the skill level and the intended type of use. Inflatable all-rounders are a good choice for most beginners and advanced riders. By contrast, hardboards are well suited to professionals or specialists in certain sub-disciplines.

Which SUP size is right for me?

Medium-length SUP boards are boards between 275 and 350 cm. These are best suited for most users. The larger and heavier the user, the larger and more resilient the board should be.

A good rule of thumb is that the board should exceed your own body length by one the length of the paddle blade. The maximum permissible weight specified by the manufacturer must also be observed.

Why is a SUP so expensive?

With SUPs, a higher price usually also means higher quality, especially in terms of stability and durability:

  • If you only want to try SUP once, you can hire boards from SUP rental shops at many vacation resorts.
  • If the board is to be used for more than just a bit of vacation fun, for example for long tours, the higher price is often worthwhile.

Which SUP is suitable with a dog?

An all-round paddle board that is large enough and stable in the water is best suited for stand up paddle dogs. The most important thing when taking your four-legged friend with you is that you and your dog together do not exceed the maximum weight for the board. The dog should also be accustomed to sitting on the board before the first paddle in the water.

Where does SUP originally come from?

SUP goes back to Polynesian fishermen who went fishing on their rafts in the Pacific. Later, surf instructors adapted the SUP as a convenient way of getting around during lessons, allowing them to keep a close eye on their students. Finally, SUP also developed as an alternative to surfing on days without much wind.
