      Buy an electric longboard:
How to make the right decision

      electric longboard guide

Electric longboards are motorized and can often be controlled using a remote control. They are particularly useful for steeper climbs and longer distances. If you are looking for a good electric longboard, you should pay attention to these features and characteristics:

Motor: Which electric longboard variants are available?

There are two different types of motors for electric longboards:

      1. advantages of the hub motor?

Hub motors or hub motors are installed directly in the rollers. They do not require maintenance because no dirt can accumulate on them. Hub motors roll very smoothly even with an empty battery, so that the board does not have to be carried.

They have slightly less power and drive more slowly. As hub motors are installed in the castors, they cannot be replaced.

      2. advantage of the belt motor?

Belt motors offer better performance and a higher top speed. They accelerate faster and are better able to master climbs. With belt motors, the rollers, and therefore the terrain, can be changed as often as required.

The rollers of these motors can jam slightly when the battery is empty, which can lead to uneven driving or aborted driving. Belt motors require some maintenance from time to time, as dirt can accumulate between the belts.

Important to know: The belts can break if you ride too hard.

Top speed & range: How fast and far should the electric longboard be able to travel?

The manufacturer specifies the maximum speed and range of the board. This is important to know:

      Maximum speed

A good maximum speed for beginners is 40 km/h. Anything above this initially increases the risk of falls and injuries.

      Reach

      The range depends on:

      • Area of application: Steep and uneven terrain results in higher battery consumption and a shorter range.
      • Charging options: If there is always a charging option available, the board can theoretically ride forever.

ESC/remote control: What must the controllers be able to do?

ESC stands for Electric Skateboard Controller. A remote control offers a very relaxed way to control the speed of the board.

It should be set so that the transition from standstill to movement is smooth and not jerky. Accelerating too suddenly and too quickly can lead to falls.

Deck: What is a good electric longboard deck?

The deck of most high-quality longboards is made of bamboo or maple. This material is very stable and at the same time ensures flexibility. Other important criteria are

      • Length

Longer boards between 90 cm and 110 cm are generally suitable for beginners. Long boards offer more space and stability. They automatically have more material and are heavier, which makes transportation more difficult.

If you opt for a model that is shorter than 90 cm, you get a very maneuverable and compact board. However, it also means that the shorter the deck, the smaller it becomes.

      • Width

The width is similar to the length. Narrower boards have less material and are lighter. The deck then no longer offers as much standing space.

Wider decks offer more stability. This makes the board heavier and slightly more unwieldy. The right board width can be found based on the shoe size:

        • Up to size 33: 16.5 cm – 17 cm
        • Size 34 – 36: 17.8 cm
        • Size 37 – 39: 18.5 cm
        • From size 40: at least 19 cm
      • Flex

The flex indicates how flexible a deck is. It is divided into different levels and depends on the rider’s body weight:

        • Flex 1: hard, up to 120 kg
        • Flex 2: medium, up to 75 – 80 kg
        • Flex 3: soft, up to 65 kg

Wheels: What is important for electric longboard wheels?

The wheels have a major influence on the riding style and speed of every longboard. If the wheels do not match the desired riding style, they are more of a nuisance and reduce the fun of riding. There are two different models of electric longboards:

      PU wheels (polyurethane)

PU wheels are the classic longboard wheels without a profile. They are suitable for smooth, asphalted roads as they transmit speed very well.

      AT-Wheels (All Terrain)

AT castors are recommended for rough terrain because they are better at smoothing out bumps and cracks. You can drive almost anywhere without any problems. Their only weak point is sandy ground, as they sink in here.

The following factors are decisive for PU castors:

      • When large castors? The main feature of large castors is a diameter of 65 mm – 100 mm. Due to their size, they can hold speeds better and offer significantly more stability.

The larger the reel, the higher the probability of a wheelbite. The wheels touch the deck, which can lead to accidents and injuries during the journey. To prevent such incidents, there are decks with recesses above the roller area.

      • Prefer small rolls? A diameter of 48 mm – 65 mm is typical for small rollers. They have a higher speed and accelerate faster than large rollers. Small wheels are more agile and responsive.
      • What degree of hardness? The so-called Dormeter indicates the degree of hardness of the rollers. The A-scale shows how soft or hard the wheels are. It starts at 73A (very soft) and ends at 100A (very hard).

The harder the wheels are, the more speed they can build up and the less traction they offer. Soft wheels are characterized by more grip and safety. They can better compensate for unevenness while driving.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions and answers

How does an electric longboard work?

Electric longboards have a motor mounted on the deck that can be operated with a remote control. This means that the drive is no longer powered by physical strength alone and riding becomes easier.

How fast can an electric longboard go?

Longboards for beginners and children have a top speed of 15 – 20 km/h. The fastest boards travel between 40 – 50 km/h. Suitable protective clothing, such as a helmet and pads, should be worn at such speeds.

Are electric longboards allowed in Germany?

Driving in road traffic is not permitted in Germany. Here, the boards may only be used on private and company property.

Whether electric longboards can be used legally depends on the licensing regulations. So far, there are no boards with road approval, as many longboards are too fast and lack the necessary steering or holding bar.

Where can you ride an electric longboard?

In Germany and Austria, electric longboards may only be used on private and company-owned property. As there is no suitable regulation for electric longboards, they are not permitted in road traffic.

How to build an electric longboard yourself?

Electric longboards can be built yourself with a little time and know-how. You can easily buy DIY modification kits on Amazon. How much does a good electric longboard cost?

A good electric longboard can cost between 300 $ and 700 $. Longboards with higher ranges or some extras can be more expensive. There are no upper limits for longboards in this respect.

Are there any independent tests of electric longboards?

Consumer Reports and Öko Test have not yet published a test on electric longboards. There is therefore no independent test winner in this category. Some good models can be found in our recommendations.

Where can you buy electric longboards?

Electric longboards are offered by various manufacturers. Amazon offers a large selection of models. In addition, the boards are also offered on the manufacturers’ own websites.
