• SUP surfing: The right fin plays an important role here. It affects the stability and maneuverability of the board on the wave. The smaller the paddle board fins, the more the SUP board turns and the more unstable it becomes.
• SUP Touring: These boards are ridden with a long center fin, also known as a single fin. For most touring stand-up paddlers, the fin supplied with the board is sufficient. Nevertheless, it is worth trying out the feel of different fins. If the board feels wobbly, a larger fin should be used.
• SUP Racing: The right fin can give you a decisive advantage in races. There is therefore a large selection of fins made from different materials. • SUP Downwind: Downwind is a kind of mixture of SUP surfing and touring. In the past, only single-fin set-ups were used, but now there are also more and more downwind SUP boards with thrusters or quad set-ups.

  The position of the center fin can be adjusted if the center fin box is suitable for single fins. The further forward the fin is positioned, the looser the ride feels and the board breaks out easily. If the fin is in the back of the box, it provides plenty of speed.
• Quad: With four paddle board fins, the SUP board becomes much faster. However, this set-up is not ideal for every board and can only be used if 4 or 5 fin boxes are available.
• Material: fins are made of plastic, fiberglass, carbon or a combination of the different materials. Carbon is very light and stiff and therefore delivers the best performance. Plastic fins are cheap and durable, but more flexible, which means less pressure can be exerted on the tail.
• Compatibility: Not every paddle board fin fits into the boxes on the SUP board. When buying a paddle board fin, you should make sure that it is compatible with the fin boxes on the board. The most common types of fin boxes are:
