Buy wakeboard bindings:
How to make the right decision

wakeboard_binding_sale

The wakeboard binding is an important part of the wakeboard setup and has a big influence on the riding feel and style. However, the range of products on the Internet is huge and can easily be confusing.

BeyondSurfing’s buying guide gives you the knowledge you need about performance and features. You are guaranteed to find the perfect wakeboard binding.

What you need to consider when buying a wakeboard binding

When looking for the best wakeboard binding, you should definitely pay attention to the following features and characteristics:

  • Seat
  • Kind
  • Closure
  • Flex
  • Compatibility

How should the wakeboard binding fit?

The binding must be the right size for the rider and fit well. Otherwise the wakeboard is difficult to control or your feet start to hurt.

Everyone has different feet, so it is important to try on the wakeboard binding before buying. If you have narrow feet, you need a narrow binding, if you have wide feet, you need a wide binding and so on.

This ensures the binding sits correctly:

If the binding firmly encloses the heel and the foot does not have much room to move, you have the right binding. If you experience pain when wearing them, the boots are too small.

Make sure you try on the bindings before you buy them. Some bindings are one-size, while others are adapted to shoe sizes.

Individual adaptation to your feet:

There are heat molded liners that are adapted to the exact shape of the foot using heat. You can see how this is done here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P8paUSjwik

The right type of wakeboard binding?

Wakeboard bindings can basically be divided into two different types:

  1. Open Toe (open binding)
  2. Closed Toe (closed binding)

Both have different advantages and disadvantages:

1 Open Toe Wakeboard Binding
  • One-size for different shoe sizes
  • Lots of flex
  • Inexpensive
  • Quick to put on and take off
  • Poorer performance
  • Not a perfect fit

Open toe bindings are particularly suitable for beginners in the world of wakeboarding and for recreational use. The high flex makes the bindings comfortable to wear.

They are open at the front so that the toes are exposed. This means that the bindings can be worn by people with different shoe sizes.

They are also a good choice for children because the little ones don’t grow out of their bindings so quickly.

Open toe bindings are also cheaper and easier to use.

In terms of performance, open toe bindings do not come close to closed bindings. The boots are not a perfect fit and usually have some wiggle room.

If the binding is too wide, the wakeboard will feel wobbly on the water. Movements are transferred more poorly to the board.

2 Closed toe wakeboard bindings
  • Perfect fit
  • Performance
  • Comfort
  • Warm
  • High price
  • Only suitable for one shoe size/person

Closed toe bindings are the most common in wakeboarding and a must for every ambitious wakeboarder! The binding is closed at the front and is reminiscent of a snowboard boot.

This type of wakeboard binding has the highest comfort and the best performance. The closed shape means the shoe fits perfectly. As a result, the foot has little room to move and movements are transferred directly to the board.

For wakeboarding in winter or cold water, a closed binding is highly recommended for warm toes.
Closed toe bindings are more expensive than open toe bindings due to their high-quality material. They can only be used by people with similar feet.

The investment is worth it, because the riding experience is much better than with open toe bindings.

The right closure system?

The following systems are available for closing and tightening the wakeboard binding:

  1. Shoelaces
  2. Velcro fastener
  3. System binding
  4. BOA
1 Wakeboard binding with laces

The binding is tightened with the help of laces. However, these are not laced, but tightened with a fastener.

Laces ensure a good fit and adapt to the foot. There are two variants:

  • Double Laced: one lace each for instep and shaft.
  • Single Laced: one lace for the entire shoe.
Tip: Double Laced is recommended here! The shoe adapts better to the foot and movements are transmitted well.
2 Wakeboard binding with Velcro fastener

Here the binding is closed with a Velcro fastener. The Velcro fastener can be opened quickly and easily, but does not adapt to the foot as well as laces.

The choice of fastener therefore depends primarily on personal preference.

3 System binding

This wakeboard binding is very similar to a snowboard binding. The binding consists of two parts:

  1. Binding that is screwed to the board.
  2. Shoe with which the rider climbs into the binding.

The boot is then attached to the binding using ratchets.

Another variant is a binding with an inner boot. The second inner boot is used to step into the binding.

The advantage of system bindings: With this binding, you never have to take off your boots. This allows the rider to walk comfortably over stones or other sharp objects on land or in the water. The shoes also provide buoyancy in the water.
The disadvantage: The shoes wear out faster than other wakeboard bindings.
4 BOA Wakeboard binding

This system works in a similar way to shoelaces. But instead of these, thin steel cables are used, which are tightened with a rotating knob.

The BOA system is reliable and can be tightened very tightly.

The right flex for wakeboard bindings?

Flex refers to the degree of hardness of the shoe. The hardness of the boot affects the riding characteristics of the wakeboard. There is no general scale.

Most manufacturers divide their shoes into:

  • soft
  • medium hard
  • hard

What effect does a soft or hard flex have on driving behavior?

  • Lots of flex/soft binding: good for tricks. This makes the board easy to maneuver. Recommended for beginners.
  • Little flex/hard binding: Good for carving and for fast radical turns where there is a lot of pressure on the edge.

Watch out: All bindings feel hard when you buy them, they have to be broken in first.

The right wakeboard stance?

To be able to ride the wakeboard, the binding must be mounted on the wakeboard. There are several holes on the front and back of the wakeboard to adjust the binding correctly.

There are markings on the binding for the angle at which the binding is screwed on.

Important: What you should consider with wakeboard bindings

To find out how far apart the bindings are, simply jump into the air from a standing position. When landing, pay attention to how far apart your feet are. That’s how far apart the ties must be.

Beginner Stance

This stance is great for training the basics, with the rear foot far back so that most of the weight is there.

  • Rear binding:
On the rearmost hole and angle at 0°
  • Front binding:
Should be as far away from the rear binding as necessary. Angle of 15-27° to the outside.
Intermediate Stance

Once you have mastered the basics, you can practise your first tricks with this stance. The binding is located more centrally on the board, which makes spins and fakie (backwards) riding easier.

  • Rear binding:
Penultimate hole and angle to 0-9°.
  • Front binding:
As far away from the rear binding as necessary. Angle of approx. 18°
Advanced Stance

With this stance, all tricks can be performed in both directions. The position is neutral and resembles the stance of a duck. Hence the nickname: Duck Stance.

  • Rear binding:
Three holes from the rear and an angle of 9° to the outside.
  • Front binding:
Four holes from the front and an angle of 9° to the outside.

Wakeboard binding compatibility

Always make sure that the wakeboard binding fits the wakeboard. In the past, the corresponding holes on the binding and the wakeboard were 8 inches (20.32 cm) apart. It is now 6 inches (15.24 cm).

Important: What you should consider with wakeboard bindings

Check the manufacturer’s information to find out how wide the bindings are and which screws are required. Then check whether the screws for the binding also fit into the wakeboard.
